The Science Behind Our Formulas: Why Every Ingredient Earns Its Place

The Science Behind Our Formulas: Why Every Ingredient Earns Its Place

At Tonic & Thyme, we don't add ingredients for trend value. Every single one is chosen because it does something meaningful — something your skin can actually feel. Here's what's working hard inside every bottle, and why the science backs it up.

Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

When your skin is tight, reactive, or just plain unhappy, Panthenol is the first thing it needs. It draws moisture deep into the skin, supports cell regeneration, and has been clinically shown to strengthen the skin barrier. Think of it as a long drink of water that actually stays.

Niacinamide

One of the most researched actives in modern skincare — and for good reason. Niacinamide visibly reduces redness, minimises pores, and helps regulate oil production without stripping. Most powerfully, it's been proven to increase ceramide production — the lipids your barrier is literally built from. Calmer, clearer, stronger skin. That's Niacinamide.

Alpha-Bisabolol

Derived from chamomile, Alpha-Bisabolol is nature's answer to angry, sensitised skin. Studies show it reduces inflammation at a cellular level, speeds up wound healing, and enhances the absorption of other actives — so everything around it works harder too. Gentle, but genuinely powerful.

Allantoin

A quiet achiever. Allantoin softens and smooths the outermost layer of skin while stimulating healthy cell turnover underneath. It's soothing on contact, non-irritating, and has been shown to support skin repair — making it ideal for anyone dealing with dryness, eczema-prone, or post-reaction skin.

Colloidal Oat

Finely milled oats aren't just a home remedy — they're an FDA-recognised skin protectant. Colloidal Oat forms a breathable film over the skin, locking in moisture and physically calming itch and irritation. Rich in beta-glucans, it actively supports the skin microbiome and reinforces your barrier from the outside in. This one's the heartbeat of our Green Gardens line.

Pink French Clay

Don't let the word "clay" worry you — Pink French Clay is the gentlest of its kind. It draws out impurities and excess oil without stripping, while its natural mineral content (silica, calcium, magnesium) helps tone and support the skin's surface. The result is clean, balanced skin that doesn't feel punished.

Jojoba

Technically a wax, not an oil — which is exactly why it's so compatible with human skin. Jojoba's molecular structure mimics our own sebum, meaning it absorbs seamlessly without clogging pores. It regulates oil balance, softens, and carries a natural anti-inflammatory action. Works for every skin type. No exceptions.

Olive Squalane

Squalane is found naturally in your skin — but production drops significantly from your mid-20s. Replenishing it with plant-derived Olive Squalane restores that youthful suppleness, improves elasticity, and protects the lipid barrier from moisture loss. Lightweight, non-greasy, and deeply nourishing. Your skin recognises it as its own.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

One of the most stable plant oils in existence, Meadowfoam Seed Oil forms a protective barrier on the skin's surface that locks in every other active you've applied. It's rich in long-chain fatty acids that mirror skin lipids, making it exceptionally softening and barrier-supportive. Your skin stays hydrated longer — not just when it's damp.

Coco-Caprylate

A lightweight, fast-absorbing emollient derived from coconut. Coco-Caprylate gives our formulas that silky, never-greasy skin feel while supporting the lipid layer. It spreads evenly, carries other ingredients well, and is exceptionally gentle — no irritation, no heaviness, just softness.

Aloe Vera Juice

Used as a base rather than water in several of our formulas, Aloe Vera Juice brings immediate cooling and calming on contact. Rich in polysaccharides, it hydrates, soothes inflammation, and promotes healing. It also contains natural enzymes that gently refine skin texture over time. Real Aloe — not a token drop.
